History of the beer style
The beginning of the development of brown ale was in
Great Britain in the mid 1700’s. This coincided with the
development of pale malt. For nearly two centuries nothing like
the brown ales we know today were ever brewed. The lighter colored
ales were pale ales, which were made exclusively with pale malt.
The darker ales, porter and stout, were made with dark roasted
malts and sweeteners such as molasses or honey. With the advent
of new technologies in barley malting, malts were created that
were darker than pale but not as harsh tasting as the dark roasted
malts. In the1920’s British breweries developed the first
commercially brewed brown ales using a combination of pale, crystal
and roasted malts. It was an immediate success. While certain
brown ales are still very popular today, very few breweries in
the U.K. are still producing them. In America, however, the style
is wildly popular and flourishing with over 300 different craft
breweries making their own version of brown ale, including Abita
Turbodog, a superb example of a dark brown ale. Our newest select
is a variation of the style called Nut Brown Ale, a brew that
features a velvety smooth and attractive taste.
Abita's Select Nut Brown Ale
Our Nut Brown Ale is meticulously crafted with British pale and crystal
malts, as well as specialty roasted malts from the U.S. This
gives the beer a very malty flavor and aroma, with hints of nuts and
baking bread. In keeping with tradition, it is hopped and dry hopped
with the highest quality English Kent Golding hops. The Hops give
the beer a subtle earthy hop flavor without overpowering the malt
character. The result is a bronze colored ale that is refreshing and
pleasantly aromatic with a sweet malty taste. Our Nut Brown Ale is
sure to please anyone who is looking to explore brews with flavor
and diversity.
Food Pairings
Our Nut Brown Ale is the perfect brew because it is very versatile
and compliments a number of dishes quite well. For starters,
it is a wonderful accent to a plate of select nuts, cheeses and breads.
It pairs well with almost all red meats, but is subtle enough
not to overpower some seafood dishes. It would be the perfect compliment
to New Orleans’ favorite delicacies such as trout meuniere or
trout almondine. In addition, it would be excellent alongside
almost any barbequed dish.
