Martha Stewart Living Radio: Superbowl Beer Tasting: The Radio Blog

With Super Bowl 44 — Indianapolis Colts vs. the New Orleans Saints, around the corner, it seemed like the perfect time to talk beer. I was joined by Brian Yaeger, beer enthusiast and author of “Red, White, and Brew: An American Odyssey” who put together a list of American craft beers that would work perfectly with Super Bowl fare. Brian walked me through a tasting of eight beers, with five representing Indiana and Louisiana.
First up: Alpha King Pale Ale a hoppy, pleasantly bitter brew (the American hops contribute bitterness) followed by Gumballhead (no, I did not make that name up), an American Pale Wheat Ale with a sweet, banana-like aroma and a hint of citrus. Both are from Three Floyds brewery in Indiana and are primarily distributed in the Midwest.

Next we headed to Louisiana to sample two from Abita Brewing: Restoration Pale Ale and Turbodog Brown Ale. Restoration Pale Ale is everyman’s beer, the type that’s universally loved for it’s full flavor and fresh taste. Turbodog is malty with chocolate notes (I got a lot of cocoa) and rich; in fact, I could see quaffing this brew with some chocolate dessert. Another from Louisiana, and I must admit, my favorite, was Blackened Voodoo, a lager from Dixie brewery — a little bitter, a little sweet, and full-bodied; perfect with that bowl of red.

Sam Adams Noble Pils is spicy with citrus notes and I could see it washing down a plate of peppery chicken wings. Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, a seasonal beer is hoppy and bitter with some fruity overtone and would hold it’s own against big bold foods. Our final taste, a beer chosen as much for its patriotic label as its taste was Rogue American Amber Ale, mild, slightly bitter and easy to drink. Fun — let the game begin!
