FINALLY…MICRO BREW IN A CAN MAN!

27 Jul

Abita's Amber, Jockamo IPA and Purple Haze

Olivia: Now for you die hard micro-brew fans who use to loved crushing that yucky brand beer can on your head to impress the chicks at the company BBQ way back in the day when you drank yucky beer…your day has arrived!  Microbrew beer in a can!   Insert the manly sound effect here as you read:  The beer “GROWL”!

Drew:  More and more micro-breweries are adding cans to their line-up. From what I have tasted there is no discernable difference from the bottle. With today’s technology in aluminum cans it was bound to happen. The beer can itself has been around for about 75 years but the micro-breweries have only just begun, only a few of them started to can as little as 2 to 3 years ago. In the Colorado market we have a plethora of local and out-of-state breweries to choose from, and all of these I believe are shipping to most of the country as well. Here is a short list of some Micro-breweries that offer cans: Avery Brewing Company, Boulder, Colorado; Oskar Blues, Longmont, Co.; New Belgian Brewing Company, Fort Collins, Co.; Maui Brewing Company, Maui, HI.; and I just saw a press release that said the Abita Brewery in Abita Springs, Louisiana is releasing 3 of their beers in can (Amber, Jockamo IPA and Purple Haze). The Rep from Oskar Blues told me that the can is an all around easier and more efficient way to ship. Cans are not as heavy as bottles, you can stack more on a palate and therefore in a container making is less costly to move the product. The other advantage of cans is that they can go places easier or where a bottle can’t. The pool, beaches, boating, camping – easy to crush and haul out, back-yard BBQ’s where you don’t have to worry about dropping a bottle on your deck. And now you have a much more interesting line-up to choose from! Say good-bye to the same old boring canned industrial beers and step up to flavor!

Olivia:  Now get that forehead ready and let’s crush some  “decent tasting” beer cans on your head….GROWL!!!

Abita in cans for the 1st time

For the first time, Abita beer is going to be sold in cans.

Officials at the Northshore brewery say they have found a way to do it without compromising quality.

"We announced it today," Abita President David Blossman told WWL First News. "It's something we've been working on for quite some time."

Why hasn't Abita ever been in cans before?

"Well, it was always a quality issue," Blossman explained. "We're not going to do anything that's not of the highest quality."

He says it's all about the taste of the beer.

"They have these new water-based epoxy liners that really do a good job of insulating the beer from the metal," Blossman insisted.

Will it taste exactly the same in the cans as it does in the bottles?

"Yes!" he said.

No. 16 New Orleans

Beer lovers in the Big Easy may not need to be picky: the city also ranked No. 1 for its bar scene and cocktail hour and No. 2 for being wild. But if you want some local microbrew flavor, check the taps at your chosen neighborhood joint and order an Abita—or visit its brewery and tasting room outside town.
