Mardi Gras: those two words might make you think "No way!" Or it might make you scream, "No limits!"

If you fall somewhere in the middle - if you want to drink some Hurricanes or Abitas, and wear some beads but keep your shirt on
- and can’t make it to New Orleans for the parades, here are a few
places around the country that might almost make you feel that you’re
there. And hopefully not worry about finding a clean bathroom.

Heaven on Seven - Chicago, Illinois
At his 30-year-old-restaurant in Chicago, which now has three locations,
Jimmy Bannos Sr. turns out remarkable Cajun food; training with
legendary New Orleans chefs Emeril Lagasse and Paul Prudhomme
will do that for your cooking. Bannos’s cookbook, "Heaven on Seven:
Where It’s Mardi Gras All the Time!" makes you think it’s going to get a
little crazy on Fat Tuesday. Especially when you see the cover photo of
Bannos with more beads than I would have thought humanly possible.

The Gumbo Pot - Los Angeles, California
Basically every New Orleans-style dish you could want, the Gumbo Pot has
got. The huge menu has a New Orleans Favorites section with classics
like jambalaya, red beans & rice, 13 different po' boys as well as
muffulettas; there’s also meatloaf and frog legs and traditional or
chocolate beignets, served with chicory coffee. There’s a brand new
location on Hollywood but the annual Mardi Gras party with zydeco music
and parades takes place at the Farmer's Market at 3rd & Fairfax.

Bayou Bakery - Arlington, Virginia
David Guas is an New Orleans native and at Bayou Bakery, he takes his
heritage seriously. On Mardi Gras Eve, he’s hosting a dinner with a jazz
quartet playing (dancing!). “Beads and cups are yours to keep, costumes
optional, and a Bourbon Street attitude necessary,” says the website.

Fat Tuesday will feature parade-route fare including: crawfish etouffée, crab boil peppa weenies, Bayou Bakery’s outstanding cream cheese-stuffed King Cakes and cups of Rebirth Punch.

Sugar Freak - Astoria, New York
This new spot in Queens checks off the greatest hits of Louisiana from boudin balls to muffuletta, served whole or "nice half." Around this time of year, you’ll see specials like any po' boy plus any Abita beer. They serve the Purple Haze, Turbo Dog, Amber, IPA or the root beer, which is terrific, for $15.

Miss D's New Orleans Pralines - Atlanta, Georgia
If you’re in Atlanta and wanting to celebrate Mardi Gras with some pralines
rather than a parade cup filled with Southern Comfort, then you should
go to Sweet Auburn Curb Market. Miss D uses an authentic New Orleans
recipe and Georgia pecans to make her terrific candies. She also has
some amazing, New Orleans-inspired popcorns, like Cajun Fried Pickle,
Banana Caramel and Jalapeno.

Thursday night at the Hyatt Hotel, Abita Beer released a special brew as
a tribute to the former Saint. It started as a Facebook contest, and
(New Orleans) The Abita Brewing Company is pleased to announce the
debut of three of its flagship brews in cans: Amber, Purple Haze® and
Jockamo I.P.A.® The Abita cans will appear in stores, restaurants and
bars in the New Orleans area Monday, February 6 and with wider
distribution across the region and the nation to follow.

Consumers can get a sneak peek at the new Abita cans at a Pub Crawl
scheduled for Friday, February 3 at 6P.M. in New Orleans. Participation
in the Pub Crawl is free, but registration is required. Abita fans can

“We’re very excited about this launch. Now our customers can take
Abita to the places we love in Louisiana where glass might not be
convenient or allowed...parades, fishing, tubing, golfing or the beach,”
said David Blossman, Abita Brewing Company President . “We’ve made it
even easier to bring Abita to the party, wherever it’s happening.”

“For many years people associated craft beer with glass bottles only,
but the perception and the technology of the aluminum beverage can has
really changed. We feel confident that today’s cans are a quality
solution that will preserve and protect the flavor of Abita,” said
Blossman.

The new Abita cans will be coated with a special water-based lining to
protect and preserve the great taste of the beer. This lining insulates
the beer from the can’s interior surface. Canning also limits exposure
to UV light and oxygen, two elements that can damage the taste of
beer.

The Abita Brewing Company is pleased to announce that they will dedicate funds from sales of their upcoming Select brew, an Imperial Red Ale, to former New Orleans Saints player Steve Gleason and the Gleason Family Trust. Gleason announced in September that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease. ALS is a debilitating neuromuscular malady for which there is no cure.

Twenty-five cents from each pint of the beer sold will benefit the Gleason Family Trust. I helped create the recipe, which is a dream come true for a beer guy like me. “

“It’s going to be an Imperial Red Ale.” Gleason continued, “I’m asking fans of Abita and members of Team Gleason to visit my Facebook page and suggest names for this very special brew. There are so many creative brains out there, I know they’ll come up with something really special.”

“Everyone has been touched by Steve’s story,” said David Blossman, President of the Abita Brewing Company. “We wanted to help raise awareness for his case and his cause, so we chose to do what we do best: brew beer. It is our hope that this Select brew will help advance Steve’s goal to continue to live a remarkable life and inspire others to do the same.”

The author of the winning name will join Gleason for a pint of the Abita brew at a special event when the beer is introduced to the public in early February 2012. The Abita Select Imperial Red Ale is a very malty brew with a slightly fruity yeast flavor. It has a nice hop flavor and aroma and is 8 percent alcohol by volume. .

Abita Select is an exclusive premium draft product line from Abita that features a new style every few months. These specialty brews can be found only on tap and only at certain restaurants and bars.
Experience Abita Imperial Louisiana Oyster Stout

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 25, 2011

Brew made with real Louisiana Oysters

Abita is proud to introduce their newest Select brew, made with real Louisiana oysters. Last year the Abita Brewing Company sponsored a home brew competition and offered the winning brewer a unique prize, a chance for their beer to be brewed by Abita and distributed as an Abita Select offering. The winning home brewer is Kerry Dale Yoes of Zachary, with Imperial Louisiana Oyster Stout.

Home brewers from around the region gathered in March of last year at the Abita Brewery to compete. Yoes’ beer was the judges favorite and earned him the “Andy Award.” The award was named in honor of Abita’s first home brew contest winner, Andy Thomas who created the base recipe for Abita Andygator many years ago.

Abita Celebrates Louisiana Seafood

“We are especially pleased to offer this new Select because it contains real Louisiana oysters,” said David Blossman, President of Abita Beer. “We want the world to know that seafood fresh from Louisiana is ready and waiting for them to enjoy in so many ways...including as an ingredient in craft beer. Using Louisiana ingredients in our brews, from strawberries and satsumas to pecans and oysters, is just another way Abita Beer keeps their promise to always stay Louisiana True.”

Abita’s Imperial Louisiana Oyster Stout is made with pale, caramel, roasted and chocolate malts. Oats are also added to give the beer a fuller and sweeter taste. The roasted malts give the beer its dark color, as well as its intense flavor and aroma. The flavors of toffee and chocolate are prevalent but not overpowering. The beer is hopped with Willamette hops. Since the beer gets so much flavor from the malts there is not a lot of hop flavor. There is just enough bitterness to complement the sweetness of the malt. Finally, freshly shucked Louisiana oysters are added to the boil. The salt from the oysters gives the beer a more intense aroma and mouthfeel.

Abita Select is an exclusive premium draft product line from Abita that features a new style every few months. These specialty brews can be found only on tap and only at certain restaurants and bars. Consumers can locate Abita Select by using the beer finder on the Abita website or downloading the free Abita iPhone app.

About the Abita Brewing Company

The Abita Brewing Company was founded in Abita Springs, La., in 1986 and is the
oldest and largest craft brewer in the southeast. Abita is the 24th largest commercial
brewer by production volume in the nation and the 15th largest craft brewer in the United States. Sales for the company should exceed 130,000 barrels this year.

Abita Brewing Company produces seven flagship brews year-round: Abita Amber, Golden, Light, Turbodog, Purple Haze, Jockamo I.P.A. and Restoration Pale Ale. Abita also offers five seasonal beers, three Harvest brews, four Big Beers and a draft-only series of Select beers.

#
CONTACT: Beth Harris
Twenty five years ago in downtown Abita
Springs, a small southern town just north of New Orleans, a beer was
born. This high quality craft brew was made with all natural
ingredients and Abita Springs’ famous artesian water. Today, just a
mile and a half from the original location, the Abita Brewing Company
has become the oldest and largest craft brewer in the southeast.

From a humble beginning of just 1,500 barrels of beer in 1986, brewing
for Abita should exceed 130,000 barrels in 2011. Abita Golden and Amber
were the original beers produced by Louisiana’s first craft brewery.
Now the Abita Brewing Company produces seven year-round flagship brews,
five seasonal beers, three Harvest brews, four Big Beers, a draft-only
series of Select beers and a root beer all from a state-of-the-art
brewing complex.

Introducing 25th Anniversary Vanilla Doubledog

To mark this wonderful milestone, Abita Brewing Company has created a
special commemorative brew, 25th Anniversary Vanilla Doubledog. The
robust dark ale has flavors of chocolate, toffee and vanilla. It is
brewed with generous amounts of pale, caramel and chocolate malts and
Willamette hops. Whole natural vanilla beans are added during the aging
process. 25th Anniversary Vanilla Doubledog is packaged in a
commemorative, 22-ounce anniversary bottle illustrated with a design
inspired by classic New Orleans wrought iron. The Doubledog brew is a
tribute to Abita’s Turbodog, which was originally created as an
anniversary beer in 1989. Today, Turbodog is an Abita Flagship brew and
sold year-round.

History of the Abita Brewing Company

The brewery was founded in 1986, but Abita Beer was not available in
bottles until 1989. In 1994, the brewery moved to the site of their
current operations on Highway 36. Just two years later, in 1996,
Abita’s production had more than doubled, reaching 33,000 barrels
annually.

Twenty-five years later, the company continues to grow. In 2012 Abita
Beer will introduce Abita in cans for the very first time. Abita is the
24th largest commercial brewer by production volume in the nation and
the 15th largest craft brewer in the United States.

Brewed Locally, Loved Nationally

From its small beginning in Abita Springs, the popularity of this
Louisiana brew has grown and today Abita Beer is sold in 46 states and
Puerto Rico. Abita is a favorite of chefs across the country and is
enjoyed on-screen in the popular HBO programs Treme and True Blood.

We’ve made it even easier to bring Abita to the party, wherever it’s happening.”

“Cans go where glass bottles sometimes cannot--think about Louisiana’s 3,000 miles of coastline, over 400 annual festivals, 194 golf courses and 22 state parks. It all adds up to plenty of good reasons to put Abita Beer in cans.”

“Of course, I always preach the right way to drink a beer is to pour it into a proper glass. It’s the full sensory experience.” Blossman concluded.

Recycle and Renew, That’s Louisiana True

Aluminum cans are environmentally friendly. They are easy to recycle, weigh less to ship and the average new beer can is made of 40% recycled aluminum. “Abita has always been committed to a greener environment. We conserve energy and water, create our own bio-gas and drive greener vehicles. We use recycled content in our bottles and packaging materials. Aluminum cans are one more way Abita is working to keep our part of the world green and clean.”

Abita will offer the canned product in six and 12 packs and expect it to reach store shelves early in 2012. The canning will be based at the brewery in Abita Springs and Abita will also continue packaging in glass just as they have since they began brewing in 1986.

About The Abita Brewing Company

The Abita Brewing Company was founded in Abita Springs, Louisiana in 1986 and is the
oldest and largest craft brewer in the southeast.
Beer patrons benefit charity - The Advocate.com

lover — came to life Saturday at the inaugural Baton Rouge Beer Fest
downtown at the Baton Rouge River Center.

The event, sponsored by Abita Beer, offered more than 300 beer samples, and patrons could drink as many samples as they wanted.

All proceeds went to Dreams Come True of Louisiana, of which Lawrence is a board member.

The nonprofit organization gives “dreams” to
children and youth ages 3 to 18 with life-threatening illnesses. Dreams
include Disney World trips and shopping sprees.

“People are really enjoying it,” Lawrence said of
Saturday’s event. “We’re looking forward to coming back with our second
event.”

The beer varieties were spread out at tables all
across the exhibition hall of the River Center, and people moved from
table to table to taste the selections.

Samples ranged from national brews such as Sam Adams to local favorites including Abita.

Mike Cavell, of Baton Rouge, said he tried to taste as many new beers as possible.

“It’s nice to have the array of samples,” Cavell said.

However, Cavell said he is partial to Louisiana beers because he is a casual home-brewer.

“I’ve been an Abita fan for a long time,” Cavell said.

Ron Dunham, of Central, won the contest with his “Suntan Strawberry” brew, an amber beer with a hint of strawberry.

“It was something I did not expect,” Dunham said of the win.

Dunham said he has brewed his own beer for about four years and grows hops in a garden at his home.

He said he makes a variety of beers, but prefers to make Belgian ales and stouts.

“We’ve made many, many gallons of beer,” Dunham said.

Dunham’s beer sat in the back corner of the exhibition hall in a section roped off and called the “VIP Lounge.”

Dunham handed out samples of his beer to customers as they passed by, explaining its flavor and origin.

“This is the only keg in the world that exists,” Dunham told one person.

Becky Prejean, executive director of Dreams Come True of Louisiana, sat in the VIP Lounge with Dunham.

She spent most of her day serving food to people and thanking them for attending.

“I thank them for supporting and helping our children,” Prejean said.

Sean Basile, Abita regional sales manager, said Lawrence first approached Abita around Mardi Gras about sponsoring the event.

Basile said Abita was “very receptive” to the idea because of its charitable nature.

Read article on-line here

NOLA Cuisine Takes The Brewery Tour

After my first stop at Middendorf’s Seafood Restaurant,
and a brief stop in Pontchatoula, I jumped back into my car and made my
way east, above the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain to Abita Springs,
LA to visit and hopefully take the Abita Brewery tour.

Abita Brewing Company Tasting Room & Tour
166 Barbee Rd.
Abita Springs, LA

The Abita Brewing Company Visitor’s center was opened in 2008, the
old brewery now houses the Abita Brew Pub. They even have their own
cookbook called Abita Beer: Cooking Louisiana True

Upon arriving at the brewery I quickly pulled into a parking spot, and hustled up to the front of the visitor’s center:

I bellied up to the end of a group which was just entering and
noticed that everyone was wearing wrist bands, so I stepped back and
approached the guy at the door clutching a $20 bill in my hand.

“How much is the tour?” I asked.

“$20 bucks” he replied “You’ve got just enough!” then put his hand
out. As I reached to hand him my dough he broke out into a wild cackle
that would have made a Hyena blush, then slapped me on the back. Crack!

“This is free man!! You’re just in time! Here’s a wristband and a
cup, have a good time!” Another friendly slap on the back and off I
went, entering the Abita Brewery visitors center tasting room which wins
the 2011 NOLA CUISINE award for Best Place to get Drunk for Free! Not a really a real award, mind you, but if I had one, Abita would win it, hands down!

By the way, don’t be a stooge like me and go here alone, I could only
sample as I had to drive into New Orleans. Best to find some other
stooge to drive you so that you can truly partake in this excellent,
rare, FREE beer drinking opportunity!

Also, please forgive me for the less than crisp photography on this
post, but please note: All photos were taken while holding an ice cold
cup of Abita beer…I know my priorities.

The visitors center is wonderfully decorated with art work on the
walls representing many of your favorite or soon to be favorite Abita
beers, Purple Haze:

Now, I’m not going to lie, the artwork wasn’t the first thing that I
noticed upon entering the tasting room, it was the line of fellow guests
lining up behind the Mahogany bar to fill up their cups from one of 15
tappers of different Abita Beers. As much as they wanted, as many
different kinds as they would like to try…all for free. In essence, a
beer drinker’s bliss.

After about 15-20 minutes of hanging out sampling the wares, the tour begins with a video.

focus attention onto the tour into the brewery which is about 10 minutes
long.

It is quite loud in the cellar, and folks tended to keep talking

My visit finished early as I had to drive, and was looking forward
to a long afternoon, and even longer evening in New Orleans. I jumped in
my rental and made my way for the Ponchartrain causeway, which is 23.83
miles directly across Lake Pontchartrain into New Orleans!

Next up Radosta’s for an excellent cup of Gumbo and a Roast Beef Po Boy.

SOS Gives $50,000 Holiday Gift to the Friends of the Fishermen Fund

New Orleans- Christmas is coming early this week for some Louisiana fishermen. More than 250 fishermen will receive a check from the Friends of the Fishermen Fund.

The fund was created in July and has raised more than $127,000 for Louisiana Fishermen. For the initial distribution, 257 fishermen will each receive $500 . Corporate and Individual donors were a part of this outpouring of support for Louisiana fishermen following the Gulf Oil Spill. Friends of Louisiana fishermen include, Abita Beer; Rouses Markets and their customers; Hurricane Harley Davidson; Casa Argentina Social Club of New Orleans; Sammy Kershaw’s Protect Our Coastline, New Orleans restaurants; artist Michael Israel; South Florida Foodies, SUGARCANE raw bar grill; the Miami International Wine Fair; and individual donors.

The Friends of the Fishermen fund was started as a way to help the fishermen who were affected by the BP oil spill. The fund is endorsed by the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board and administrated by the South Central Planning and Development Commission. The Seafood Board selected this commission to allocate funds to Louisiana fishermen based on the commission’s exemplary work managing similar responsibilities following Hurricane Katrina.

Mike Voisin, owner of Motivatit Seafood and 7th generation oysterman is chairman of the fund. “There are victims of the Gulf Oil Spill whose needs have not been met through other programs and we are happy that we were able to work with South Central Planning and Development Commission to identify those individuals and thankful to our donors who are brightening the spirits of some very deserving fishermen,” said Voisin.

Abita Brewing Company’s $50,000 donation comes from the SOS Charitable Fund, established by the brewing company to assist with restoration and recovery after the disastrous oil spill. Abita created a special beer, SOS (Save Our Shore) – A Charitable Pilsner, and donates 75 cents for every bottle sold to the fund. The SOS charitable fund has raised more than $255,000 for Gulf Oil Spill relief.

“We feel compelled as one of Louisiana’s favorite brands to assist our neighbors and the coastal environment as we continue to recover from this disaster,” stated David Blossman President of Abita Brewing Company. “Being able to help these families during the Christmas season is a gift we’re pleased and proud to give.”

Ali Rouse, of Rouses Markets said that their company, customers and team members raised more than $25,000 in four short weeks when they sold white boots made of paper at the registers of their stores in Louisiana and Mississippi.

“After Katrina and Rita, then again after Gustav and Ike, we saw how a community pulling together could make a difference for a person, a neighborhood, a community, a state, even a region,” said Rouse. “With the spill, we saw an opportunity to help our fishing communities, and our friends, team members, and partners immediately stepped up to join us. I feel good about the money we raised, but even better about the team work that went in to raising it.”
In preparation for fund distribution, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries worked with South Central Development and Planning Commission to identify commercial fishing license holders. Applications and surveys were sent to 2515 fishermen and 1157 responded. From this data the group was able to identify fishermen who resided in affected parishes and eliminate those who had the opportunity to work for the BP vessels of opportunity program.

“Our agency was the administrator for the “Back to the Dock” program which was funded by Shell Oil and gave funds to fishermen following Hurricane Katrina and assisting with distribution donations for the Friends of the Fishermen Fund was a natural fit for us. We are thankful for the donors who make this distribution of checks possible,” said Kevin Belanger, CEO for South Central Development and Planning Commission.

The Friends of the Fishermen Fund hopes to distribute additional funding as it becomes available through other means including their partnership with the 2011 Black and Gold Super Fan Calendar, which features some of the New Orleans Saints most colorful fans. The calendar can be purchased online at www.superfancalendar.com or locally at Rouses Markets. The New Orleans Hornets also recently launched their “Believe in Blue Campaign” which will benefit Friends of the Fishermen among other gulf coast charities.

Another $100,000 Donation From SOS Charitable Fund

ABITA BREWING COMPANY SUPPORTS DUCKS UNLIMITED’S
LOUISIANA COASTAL CONSERVATION INITIATIVE

NEW ORLEANS, La. December 3, 2010 – Louisiana-based Abita Brewing Company recently donated $100,000 to Ducks Unlimited, leader in wetlands conservation, for restoration of important wetland habitats along Louisiana’s imperiled coast.

The donation comes from the SOS Charitable Fund, established by the brewing company to assist with restoration and recovery after the disastrous oil spill. Abita created a special beer, SOS (Save Our Shore) – A Charitable Pilsner, and donates 75 cents for every bottle sold to the fund. To date, more than $255,000 has been raised for the cause.

“This leadership gift will help restore more than 3,000 acres of critical wetland habitat,” Chad Manlove, DU director of development, said. “Abita’s gift will be pooled with other public and private entities to create a substantial conservation impact in coastal Louisiana.”

The Louisiana coastal marshes provide critical wintering grounds for millions of waterfowl and other migratory birds. Unfortunately, these marshes are disappearing at an alarming rate. Louisiana has already lost more than one million acres of these continentally significant wetlands and continues to lose 16,000-20,000 acres annually.

“We feel compelled as one of Louisiana’s favorite brands to assist our neighbors and the coastal environment as we continue to recover from this disaster,” stated, David Blossman, president of Abita Brewing Company. “We’re proud to be a part of the efforts to conserve and restore coastal Louisiana.”

The donation from Abita Brewing Company will be combined with a North American Wetland Conservation Act grant and financial support from other partners to restore hydrology to the Grand Bayou Unit on Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes.

“Particularly along the Gulf Coast, it is essential that corporations, individuals, public agencies and private organizations join together and combine resources to accomplish meaningful restoration,” Bob Dew, DU manager of conservation programs for Louisiana, said. “DU is fully committed to this philosophy, and we are very pleased to add Abita Brewing Company to our list of partners supporting a sustainable coast.”

Pointe-aux-Chenes has one of the highest public use rates among all of Louisiana’s wildlife management areas. Hurricane Rita damaged levees there, and in three short years without management capabilities, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries documented significant habitat deterioration and reduced wildlife use. The proposed project will allow managers to manage salinity and water levels and encourage production of submerged aquatic vegetation, an important food source for waterfowl.

The Abita Brewing Company was founded in Abita Springs, LA, in 1986 and is the oldest and largest craft brewer in the southeast. They brew more than 108,000 barrels of full flavored ales and lagers and 6,000 barrels of root beer in their state-of-the-art facility. Their lagers and ales are brewed in small batches, hand-crafted by a team of dedicated workers.

Ducks Unlimited is the world’s largest non-profit organization dedicated to conserving North America’s continually disappearing waterfowl habitats. Established in 1937, Ducks Unlimited has conserved more than 12 million acres thanks to contributions from more than a million supporters across the continent. Guided by science and dedicated to program efficiency, DU works toward the vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever.

-30-

Andi Cooper 601-206-5463 acooper@ducks.org
